Dental Fillings for Residents in Utah

Getting fillings is a way you can restore a damaged tooth to its original shape and function. It is also a way to get rid of a toothache, as the area will be cleaned and filled. If you come in for a filling at Platinum Dental, we will first remove the decayed tooth material. We will then clean the area affected by the decay before filling the cavity with a type of filling material. It is important that you have regular checkups so we can find tooth decay early. The more advanced the decay, the more difficult it will be to fill it.

Filling materials

There is a wide variety of dental fillings available:

  • Gold fillings: These are made to order in a laboratory and then cemented onto the tooth. It is rare for your gum tissues to have any kind of adverse reaction to gold fillings, which are themselves very long lasting. The downside to this material is that it is the most expensive choice, and having them fitted requires multiple visits to the dentist.
  • Composite resin fillings: This type of filling can be made to match the natural color of your teeth, which makes them the optimal choice if you want a natural-looking appearance. The materials are mixed directly into the cavity. While the natural appearance of these fillings makes them desirable, they are not always the best choice. They can chip and wear over time, so they may not be a good option if you need a larger area filled. They can also become stained from things like coffee, tea, or tobacco. In comparison to other types of cavity fillings such as gold ones, they do not last as long. Typically, composite resin fillings will last between 3 to 10 years.
  • Porcelain fillings: These are created in a lab and then bonded onto your tooth. They can be matched to the color of your tooth and unlike composite resin fillings, they are resistant to staining. A downside is that porcelain fillings are somewhat expensive.
  • Amalgam filling: This type of filling is traditionally used, as it is it is very durable (lasts at least 10 years) and the least expensive out of all types of fillings. However, because it is made of a mixture of metals, it is usually dark silver in appearance, which makes your filling very conspicuous.
